This is not a unique Bucket List item, as I’m sure most adventure seeking people have this trip on their list of places to go. I was so excited to learn that our International Rotary trip would be taking us to Peru this year. For a long time I’ve heard stories from friends of what a magically spiritual place Machu Picchu is and how many came back in some way changed. So its with no surprise that I went with heightened expectations. We arrived in the morning under a cover of misty rain. There were the pre-requisite Llamas upon entrance posing like models at the perfect spot for the perfect picture (the same one everyone takes!) We met up with our guide, who was very knowledgeable, and he led us around the more important sites for a little over an hour. Many things I had read about before coming, but it is always so cool to see it in real life. The most incredible thing to me is the fact that these ancient people had such a precise engineering knowledge and skill. Not to mention, how they managed to move all of the boulders from one mountain to the top of another. One of the most fascinating things was the rock that exactly matched the Southern Cross and worked as a perfect compass!! Luckily, as our tour came to an end, the skies began to clear and we were granted a lovely view of the whole area. But back to my expectations. As incredible as Machu Picchu is, it was so crowded and everyone is trying so hard to get the best selfie (yes, I’m guilty as well!), that it was hard to get to a quiet place for contemplation. I did not return with any epiphanies, or other spiritual awakenings. Although one could argue that maybe the epiphany should be to let go of expectations….
