Luckily I get to travel with people who love trying new food as much as I do! This time we explored Nashville's vegan and gluten free options, which were quite plentiful. Kristen and her husband Chris embarked this year on a new adventure of their own, to eat as close to vegan as possible. Since I've watched many of the mind changing documentaries myself, I try to eat as consciously as possible...but I've not had the willpower the Tylers have exhibited!! Once we checked into our hotel, the very cool Hotel Indigo (that lived a previous life as a bank), we had to pick up our race packs and needed sustenance. The concierge suggested Etch, which was just down the street from the Race Expo. Although not a vegan/vegetarian restaurant, they did have some great options. We were completely underdressed, and the A/C had us freezing, but the food was fantastic! The day we did our bike tour, we were ready to be adventurous again. We had heard there were a couple of stellar vegan restaurants in East Nashville and we'd worked up an appetite during our bike ride. One thing I was curious about was this "Hot" Chicken everyone talks about in Nashville and I found a vegan version at the Wild Cow! Personally it tastes like the tempeh was marinated in Sriracha sauce....not my fave :( However the rest of the food we had at the Wild Cow was pretty great, including a delish Bloody Mary! During our incredibly hot race, we had passed a coffee shop that played homage to Portland and we found it was directly across from the Wild Cow. Of course we had to go check it out and were not disappointed with a menu board that included many familiar names from our town.... One of the last places we decided to try out was recommended to by our friend Bijana as one of her top ten restaurants in the US that she wants to try. AVO is located in a pretty new development of Midtown Nashville and the restaurant, plus a gym and some other offices, are all built out of shipping containers. Super modern and sleek! The Avocado margarita was fantastic and their mostly raw menu was pretty tasty too....although the raw "toast" was kinda funky. I'm looking forward to my next food tour and wonder who I'll be able to drag along with me?!!
