Hello Strangers! Been awhile since I’ve posted…been a super busy, albeit rainy spring. With such a long and never ending winter, I was really looking forward to visiting Nashville and hoped for some sunny and warm days. However, I was not anticipating record breaking high temperatures on the day we ran the half marathon!! Whew it was HOT! Kristen and I arrived Friday afternoon in time to wander the town a bit and pick up our race bibs. Nashville is one of the fasting growing cities in the US and it showed with the multiple cranes and tons of construction going on around town. It’s a very pretty and surprisingly (to me) green city with lots of parks! We woke stupid early on Saturday to very muggy weather, it was already 75 degrees at 6:45am which was our race start time. It took us about 2.5 hours to complete the Rock n’ Roll Half (13.2 miles)….definitely the slowest time for either of us ever! Very, very happy when it was over. That night we went to Gaylord’s Opryland for dinner before walking over to the Grand Ole Opry for the show. The headliner for the evening was Ricky Skaggs, one of my stepdad’s favorite artists…I know Woody would have loved the show. Although I had wanted to do a Segway tour, they were not available for Monday so we opted to a bike tour through town on Sunday. It was somehow mostly downhill, which was great! We had some fun people on the tour with us, which makes all the difference. We made it to the Ryman Auditorium for our tour later in the afternoon and were able to catch part of the sound check for Cage the Elephant’s show. When we left, we asked about available tickets, but there were none. Instead we wandered down to Broadway, which is the main drag for Honky Tonks, etc. where we joined the happy Predator fans (Hockey team). At Robert’s World, we listened to some great music, chatted with some locals and drank stiff drinks! Leaving, we went past the Ryman again where scalpers were out selling tickets for the show…we scored two tickets for less than face value! Loved the spontaneousness of it and so fun seeing a live album being recorded. The next day was windier and chillier than the 80 plus degrees we’d had for the rest of the weekend. So we opted for the Country Music History Museum. All I can say, is “Wow”!! Such a great museum, with information and artifacts from any and all aspects of country music. I especially enjoyed the exhibit about Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. Also, two of my favorite artists had special exhibits, Zac Brown Band and Brad Paisley. We spent almost three hours and still didn’t see everything!! We headed out to 12 South, one of Nashville’s trendy neighborhoods. After a very dismissive experience at one store, we meandered to a couple more where we were greeted much more friendly! We especially liked Draper & James, Reese Witherspoon’s shop where they offered us sweet tea. Being big fans of the show Nashville, we managed to find a few of the spots used on the show. We had wanted to see a show at the Bluebird Cafe but unfortunately, we were a little late to get into their show for the evening, but they did let us take a few pictures. Not really sure where we wanted to go for dinner, we finally decided to make it easy and just go around the corner to Skull’s Rainbow Room. I think both of us had the idea that this was just another dive bar, but surprisingly it was a beautiful old school steak house. Gorgeous old wood work, a live band AND an old school burlesque show!! The bartender was awesome and the food was excellent, plus we met some of the most interesting people of the trip. It was a great way to end our little mini vacation! I absolutely loved Nashville and would love to go back and actually explore the hiking, caverns and lakes outside of town.
