I apologize; this blog post is waaaayyy overdue! Back in April, just after getting back from Peru, Brenda and I continued our tourism by finally doing the Shanghai Tunnels Tour in Old Town Portland. For those not familiar with Portland’s seedy past, this tour is a glimpse inside the lawlessness that was rampant during the turn of the century when Portland truly was a port city. The tunnels at one time covered almost all of what was downtown Portland a that time and ran under brothels and bars, and then out to the docks on the river. Presumably the tunnels were used to more easily deliver goods from the ships to the warehouses and shops around town. However, there was an ugly side to the tunnels as well. They were used to capture unsuspecting (and most likely drunk) men and women to be sold into slave labor. Many would wake up on a ship already out to sea and have no idea how they got there and then they were stuck for years! The tour itself was interesting, but not necessarily super compelling. Of course, I was really hoping for a ghost sighting that never happened!
