When I started this blog, I had a friend ask me “what happens if something not on the list comes up?” Well, I told her it I would still say “YES!” Life is too short to let opportunities pass you by just because its not on a list. Plus, it’s another lesson in flexibility and being open to the possibilities the universe throws at you. Although this trip had been planned for a bit, it had not made the 50 b4 50 list, mostly because it wasn’t really “top of mind” at the time. The main purpose was to visit Alex during parents’ weekend at RPI. However, Mom and I had decided to add on a few days to explore the area close to Troy/ Albany. We knew the Fall Foliage season would be towards the end, but decided to take a chance. Luckily, it turns out that Vermont was having a stellar foliage year, and there was plenty of amazing color to enjoy. With no “big plan”, other than looking at trees, we sort of played things by ear. First we spent the weekend with Alex and her friends, enjoying the cute Troy Saturday Market and a trip to the Pumpkin Patch. We made sure they were well fed, including Alex’s first Thai food since she’s been in New York…she’d been having serious withdrawals! On Sunday, Mom and I said our goodbyes to Alex (mine might have been a little teary…) and headed East to Vermont. We had made reservations at a lovely B & B in Bennington, and it turned out to be perfect, even including an Inn cat named Sylvester. Sadly I did not get a picture of Sylvester, but let’s just say, he is a very big boy! From Bennington, we did all of our exploring, including out to Lake Champlain near Fort Ticonderoga, along the Green Mountains to the Robert Frost Interpretative Trail and a visit to the Norman Rockwell museum and house. We were also able to see a few covered bridges, walk a bit on the Appalachian Trail, also called The Long Trail in Vermont, and visit a working pottery. In between all of this, there was plenty of delicious home cooked meals. I’m pretty sure Mom had some version of a Thanksgiving Turkey dinner every day! Thursday we headed back to Newark to fly home and decided to take the “scenic route” with a stop at FDR and Eleanor’s house in Hyde Park. Unfortunately, the estimated times were completely off on the map app, and we only had time to stop there for lunch. Definitely want to return for a full tour in the future. It was a fantastic trip… It was great to see Alex so happy at school with wonderful friends. And, of course, exploring the beautiful state of Vermont was a ton of fun!
